Go Gerry, Go!

My column posted on August 16 'Multichannel may not win the online war' created a hornet’s nest of debate.

It varied from “the worst advice ever” to somewhat more reasonable comments. Despite this, almost five months later, it remains on the first page of Google if you search 'multichannel'.

One line in the article read “Well, if you can’t beat them, join them”.

Interestingly it took Gerry Harvey just four months (although he may have started earlier!) to start an off shore website. In the article posted on 22 December (Harvey Norman opens GST-free website) Harvey is quoted: “if you cannot beat ’em, join ‘em”.

Sound familiar?

I am honoured to be on his wavelength on this one.

I have met Gerry a couple of times and I like him. I don’t always agree with him. In fact I have been critical in these columns. But like it or not, he is one of the greatest retailers of his time – worldwide. As usual the criticism he received for this new initiative was overwhelming. A lot of people simply shoot down anything Gerry does.

I am not singing his virtues but give him his due – he is prepared to give it a go. Retailers complain a lot. Gerry too. But he has at least got of his chair and done something while others whinge about
the shocking state of retail.

Yes, it is true that the GST is a drop in the ocean compared to the real savings on lower prices off shore. But wait, there’s more. If I know Gerry he will be looking at this too.

What about his ‘franchisors’ someone asked. Yes – they will be justifiably peeved unless Gerry compensates them. My guess is that he is already onto this. Don’t underestimate the old codger.

I say Go Gerry Go.

Their service and site is in its infancy with inaccurate product descriptions, 3 weeks shipping from the UK and no parcel/order tracking.
Good work though Gerry, geting it up in the short space of time you did. Not sure I agree with the initial statements in the media competing with your own franchisee's though

Gerry tried to tell us but we were blinded by a small "saving". People say they want service but when it comes to the bottom line, all they are interested in is the price. Sadly Gerry has given up trying to explain to the public and those in Government, that online purchasing from international sources is like eating candy...tastes sweet but in the end it rots your teeth.
Those international companies, will never spend a cent advertising in any form of traditional media in Australia and yet local TV, radio and press give them a free run. The ABC in melbourne were openly hostile to Gerry Harvey.
The simple facts are:
International online business sell their products without GST and without customs duty, that's more than a 20% head start.
They will never contribute a cent in taxes to local, state or federal government and yet our leaders cannot legislate to ensure a fair playing field for our local business that do pay tax.
They will never raise funds for local charities or support local communitity groups like our local retailers do.
They will never deposit their profits in our local banks.
They will never employ you, your friends or any of your children and yet we publicly lash the likes of Gerry Harvey when he lays out these simple truths.
So for those people that say....stop complaining and get on with it...ok let's do that, let the destruction of another industry begin....

Well done Stuart, you were on the mark last August. And I agree 'Go Gerry'
If we all stop complaining and get on with it, I say stick to your knitting and do what you do best, let the other guy worry while you get on and sell. Also take little notice of press negativity.
